Pink sand - 15th March 2026

Pink sand in Stavros, Akrotiri

The famous 'pink sand' that you see on some Cretan beaches is not restricted to Elafonisi. It can appear in other places such as here (in this older photo) on a small beach near Stavros.
Its appearance is not really seasonal but more likely related to tidal or wave action. If you inspect the sand closely you will see crushed shells but the pink colour is caused by the accumulation of microscopic single-celled organisms called Foraminifera.
