I hadn't walked inside the Preveli palm forest for quite a few years so decided to go and have a look at it again. It's recovered well from the massive fire of 2010 but I was surprised to see so many dried up palm fronds on the ground, expecting that they'd be collected to lower the risk of fire during the summer.
Walking a little further into the forest I was even more shocked to see massive amounts of debris (mainly reeds) from last year's spring floods. When I say massive amounts, I am talking of hundreds of cubic meters lining the trail. They have been here over a year (these floods happened at the end of February 2019), getting drier and drier and nobody has bothered clearing them!
Considering that the Preveli palm forest is the second largest forest of Phoenix theophrasti, an endemic specie classed as vulnerable (and protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/81 and the Bern Convention) and that the forest was almost destroyed by a fire 10 years ago, you have to admit that leaving this amount of debris to accumulate for over a year is nothing short of criminal neglect.
As for the usual excuse that funds are missing to clear all this, I'd like to know how much money the paying car park at the top of Preveli beach is making per year.
