Watermelon snow in the White Mountains

A curious phenomenon happening on high altitude snow patches in the summer is known as 'watermelon snow' and caused by Chlamydomonas nivalis, an alga that resides in the snow. You don't see it every year here because the snow often gets a covering of precipitated reddish-yellow Sahara dust (from the sirocco wind that we often get in the spring) but this year there was no sand rain so the snow stayed white and the colouring of the snow is quite clearly visible, especially if you are wearing sunglasses.
