Herons circling above Gerani beach

Migratory birds are another precusor of autumn. This group of about 50 herons was circling and circling around Gerani beach. This is common behaviour when the birds reach land (they probably flew across the Aegean) and they search for a place to land and feed. They probably had the Platanias river in mind.

Not being a birder I am not sure about the species of heron that they are. To me they look like Great Blue Herons but these don't live in Europe so I guess that they are Purple Herons. If anyone knows I'd appreciate an email.
