The Chania municipal garden (locally called 'Kypos' which means 'garden') was created in 1870 towards the end of the Turkish occupation as a free space for anybody to go for a stroll or relaxation. It seems that the very large Ficus tree in the garden is still from the original period and has reached an impressive size.
Right across the large tree is an enclosure with a few Cretan wild goats. This is probably the closest you'll come to seeing them unless you venture into Samaria or some of the other larger gorges of western Crete.
The Kypos café located in the grounds is one of the oldest cafés in Chania and still very popular with the locals.
