  • Arriving to Sweet Water beach from Loutro. You can clearly see the path descending to the beach in the left of the picture. This photo was taken a few years ago. The tamarisks trees (which were planted in about 2002 or 2003) have grown in size and number, providing more shade. And in the summer time the owner of the canteen also provides sunbeds and beach umbrellas.
  • Sweet Water beach as you see it when you are coming from Loutro. The photo was taken in spring (middle of May) so things are stil pretty quiet on the beach
  • Sweet Water beach on a stormy winter day
  • A section of the path connecting Sweet Water beach (and Loutro of course) to Hora Sfakion was built in a cliff and can be daunting if you suffer from vertigo. The path is quite wide and perfectly safe but of course that will not prevent some people from having trouble with it

  • The road connecting Hora Sfakion to Anopolis winding up the hill
  • The village of Hora Sfakion seen from the road that winds down the hill from Anopolis
  • At the entrance of the village of Hora Sfakion you can see this monument erected to commemorate 26 local people who were executed by the Nazis in September 1941 for helping allied soldiers hiding in the mountains. The names of those that were executed are inscribed on the monument and below in a glassed enclosure, are the skulls and bones of some of those executed
  • The village of Hora Sfakion viewed from the sea. The photo is taken from the ferryboat as it departs the village

  • Interior view of the castle at Frangokastello (note the snowy mountains just showing above the rampart). The castle was built by the Venetians in 1371-74 as a garrison to impose order on the rebellious region, The locals called it Frangokastello, meaning the Castle of the Franks(i.e. Catholic foreigners).
  • Until some years ago (1980's) the castle used to stand almost alone on the desolate plain but unfortunately it is now surrounded by a lot of "junk" buildings, especially a horrendous castle-like tourist trap right opposite it. The angle of this photo is carefully chosen to not include any of it.

  • Inside the courtyard of the monastery of Agios Haralambos in Frangokastello. The cemetery is located all around the church
  • Located a little to the West of Rodakino the village of Skaloti is the first village of Sfakia when you arrive from the East. It is nestled at the foot of the mountains with a view towards the Libyan Sea
  • Sheep (and a couple of goats) on the road, a common occurence in the region of Sfakia. The safety barriers have also proven to be a great hit with goats as scratching posts
  • View of the coastline from the road that links Hora Sfakion to the North of the island. Beyond the village of Komitades (in the foreground) you see Frangokastello and the coastal plain behind it
  • Frangokastello viewed from above (from the main road that descends to Hora Sfakion, with a telephoto lens). You can see all the way to the Paximadia islands and beyond in South central Crete
  • A small section of the plateau of Askyfou with the snowy summits of Kastro and Fanari towering above. The photo was taken along the road that comes from Vrysees as it descends towards the plateau
  • The plateau of Askyfou looking South. The photo was taken along the road that comes from Vrysees as it descends towards the plateau. The green fields and bare trees indicate that it was taken in winter or early spring
  • The plateau of Askyfou. The photo was taken along the road that comes from Vrysees as it descends towards the plateau. If you look carefully you'll see a few patches of snow left on the summits of Kastro and Fanari, indicating that the photo was taken in late spring
