Kissamos (formerly Kastelli)

Kissamos may be the 'capital' of the region of Kissamos but it is a small provincial town. There isn't much to see but the town has kept its Cretan character, has good amenities , a nice sea front promenade with tavernas and cafés and is an interesting choice if you want to avoid purely touristic developments and prefer to experience a more 'real' Crete.

Getting there

Kissamos is located 40 km west of Chania in the beautiful gulf of Kissamos and connected cby a good road. There are plenty of public bus connections.

A sleepy little town which is not at all geared for tourism.

Some accommodation in the town with more in the outlying areas. There are also a couple of campings nearby.

Many good restaurants frequented by the locals.

Being a town Kissamos has most things you'd need

Some bars.

The Archaeological Museum of Kissamos is worth a visit. The museum shows objects unearthed during archaeological digs in the area.

A long beach stretching east of the town. It is a mixture of sand and pebbles. Generally very quiet.
