Crete screensavers

There are now 4 Crete screensavers that you can download:

  • The original screensaver contains about 500 photos that were published as Photo of the day between 2004 and 2005 . Most of the pictures have a width of 750 pixels..  Click here to download (38MB)
  • The second screensaver includes more pictures,, all the way to 2007 also in a width of 750 pixels.  Click here to download (80MB)
  • A new screensaver shows around 250 photos taken in 2008, also in a width of 750 pixels.  Click here to download (37MB)
  • For those who have larger monitors (1280 pixels width resolution and higher) you can also get a larger version of the new screensaver where the images generally have a width of 1200 pixels.  Click here to download (80MB)

It is free for personal use and easy to install (see instructons below) and a truly wonderful way to waste time on a rainy day.

If you decide that you really like the screensaver and feel like showing your appreciation for the immense amount of work (and fun, OK, I admit it!) and the costs involved in producing these photos you can come back to this page and donate something using the Paypal button to the right. Maybe one day it will help me buy my next lens (or at least a lens cap ;-).

I'd also be grateful for your feedbak and comments on the screensaver, especially after you've used it for a little while.

Installation - the easy way for Windows XP and Vista

Download the file 'crete***.scr' and save to Desktop. Drag crete***.scr file into the folder C: Windows\sytem32.
Once this is done right-click anywhere on your desktop and select Display (if using XP) and chose 'crete***' in the screensaver options. In Vista right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose Personalize. Go to Screensaver and choose 'crete***' in the screensaver options. Anytime you get tired of the screensaver, go back to these options and change them.

*** the file names will vary depending on the screensaver you download

Installation - the longer explanation

Once you have downloaded the file the easiest way to install ".scr" files is to right click on them and then choose "Install" from available menu options. Once you do this, Windows will set the screensaver as default and open Display Properties dialog where you can adjust screensaver's settings if you wish.

This way has some disadvantages though. First, you should be careful with where you keep the screensaver file that you just downloaded. If you have put it in the temporary folder and it is likely to be deleted or moved somewhere else later, then the system won't find the screensaver anymore. So create a special folder for the file. Second, if you select another screensaver from the list in Display Properties dialog then Windows will forget any screensaver installed using the described method. That is, you will have to right click it and choose "Install" once and again.

In order to have it in your screensavers list (in Settings / Control Panel / Display / Screensaver) you need to drag the screensaver file into your Windows folder.
If you use Windows XP or Vista it is on your drive C: (or whatever the name of your drive where your operating system is installed is) it needs to go in the folder Windows/sytem32. Once you put the screensaver in this folder it will be available in the list of installed screensavers in Display Properties dialog. Now you can select it whenever you wish. Furthermore, you should worry no more about reinstalling it every time you change your mind and select another screensaver.

Minimum requirements to run the screensaver

Windows operating system with a minimum of 512 Mb RAM and 1Ghz processor.
Anything less (especially the RAM) may cause the image transitions to occur very slowly so I would not reccommend using the screensaver on old machines.
You will also need to have Microsoft DirectX 8.0 or higher installed on your computer. If you do not have it, you will get a mesage to that effect when installing the screensaver and can be taken to a download site.

Using the screensaver with a Mac

Theoretically the screen saver doesn't work with a Mac. In practice there is a simple workaround for MacOSX users (and probably other Mac OS):

Go to http://echoone.com/filejuicer/
Download "FileJuicer" and install it.
Launch FileJuicer and select "Preferences" from the "FileJuicer" menu.
Click "Uncheck All" then select JPEG and "Inflate" and "Zip, Cab".
Drag the cretexxxx.scr file onto the "FileJuicer" icon or into its window.
The images will be extracted and placed in a folder.
Drag the folder to your "Pictures" folder (or any sensible place).

Click on the Apple icon in the OSX menu bar and select "System Preferences".
Click on "Desktop & Screensaver".
Click on "Choose folder".
Navigate to the jpg folder containing the images and select it.
Click on the "Hot Corners" button and set these as you wish.
Quit "System Preferences".
Now move your mouse cursor to a "hot corner" and the slideshow will begin.

Note: "FileJuicer" is shareware. If you don't pay the miserly 12.95 Euros (+ VAT), the images will be stamped "FileJuicer".

This was tested on OS10.4.11

If you have problems with this Mac installation don't email me (I use a Windows OS) but get takea look at http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=46588
