The gorge of Samaria - a photo gallery

The pictures are following the walk, starting at Xyloskala and all the way down to the exit of the gorge. Click on the thumbnails to view the photos.

From Xyloskala to the bottom of the gorge. A descent of about 700 meters.
Agios Nikolaos. This cypress is over 2000 years old.
Kri-kris in Agios Nikolaos. The one on the left is a male about seven years old and I was lucky to be able to get so close as they are generally much more shy than young ones and females.
Between Agios Nikolaos and Samaria. You get beautiful views of the White Mountains to the West.
The village of Samaria. Here the kri-kris get pretty tame (at least the young and females) and in the afternoon, when most people have left they walk about in the village looking for scraps of food.
Shortly after the village of Samaria, you enter the narrow part of the gorge
In the river bed. You need to cross the river a number of times.
Towards the end of the gorge you get to the "Gates", one of the most photographed places in Crete, often not very successfully because the light conditions are pretty awkard.
