East of Sougia, the mountains fall steeply into the Libyan sea. This is a wild area, totally uninhabited and difficult of access. Even the shepherds abandonned it around 30 years ago. The footpath has almost disappeared in many places, due to erosion and lack of use, making the hike from Sougia to Agia Roumeli difficult and not without danger - especially of getting lost and then running out of water.
