Georgioupolis used to be a tiny fishing village located by a small
river next to a very long sandy beach. Nowadays, there are many hotels
along the beach and the village is entirely geared towards catering
for tourism. But with its river, eucalyptus trees and (still existing)
small fishing harbour it remains attractive.
Getting there: As
Georgioupolis is located right by the national road between Chania
and Rethymnon the connections by public transport are good in both
directions. It is located about 45 minutes drive from Chania airport
and a little over an hour from Heraklion airport.
Atmosphere: The
area is now dominated by the package tourists but the village
is still pleasant and has a laid back atmosphere
Accommodation: There
is lot
of accommodation but many of the larger hotels deal mainly with package
tours. Independent travelers are more likely to find places in or
near the village.
Restaurants: A
lot of the visitors eat in their hotels but there are also many restaurants
in the village.
Shopping: Many
shops and mini markets are open in the tourist season
Nightlife: Some bars
and maybe a discotheque.
Beach: Georgioupolis
has t he
longest sandy beach in West Crete (9 km). It is so long and wide
that it never feels crowded and if you walk a little towards the
East you will still find almost deserted spots. The sea can be dangerous
at times because of currents so heed the warnings of the life guards
