Almirida and Plaka

Almirida

Almirida (more correctly written as Almyrida) is a small village with a pleasant shallow beach located in the bay of Souda. Further up the hill (and 10 minutes on foot from the beach), the village of Plaka is also popular because it is very quiet with splendid views of the bay of Souda and the White Mountains.

In recent years though, both villages have seen a huge increase in construction (houses and apartments in Plaka, hotels in Almirida) and it is continuing so the quietness is diminishing fast.

Getting there:  Bus connections are infrequent so better ave your own car if you want to be able to move around easily. Almirida is located about 25 km from Chania.

Atmosphere:   Almirida is still pretty laid back but maybe not for very much longer.

Accommodation:   New hotels have been built in the past few years so there is plenty to choose from. The alrger ones are handled by tour operators.

Restaurants:   A few very good restaurants.

Shopping:   A number of shops have sprung up in the last few years and you will find just about everything in Kalives, 4 km away.

Nightlife:   A few bars. To my knowledge there is no disco... yet.

Beach:   Nice sandy beach with shallow water (so good for kids when there are no waves). But the beach is small and can easily feel crowded. Add a few more large hotels and it will be packed!
