Getting there: 16
km from Chania, frequent bus connections.
Atmosphere: Not much atmosphere
but the beach front is quiet.
Accommodation: A few
large hotels and several pleasant apartments close to the beach.
Restaurants: Some
restaurants.
Shopping: Basic needs
are covered by a few shops.
Nightlife: Some bars
and a discotheque at the western end of Maleme.
Beach: The beach is
made of fine pebbles and is far less crowded than the beaches of
Gerani, Agia Marina and Platanias.
Addtional comments: Maleme
is best known as the place where German paratroopers attacked Crete
in 1941. Most of those young men lost their life in the attack and
are laid to rest in the German
war cemetery. It is a moving place located on the hills above
Maleme and a place well worth a visit to ponder human stupidity.
