Getting there: A good
but winding road takes you over the mountains from the North coast.
Public transport is very limited.
Atmosphere: Quiet place
but lacking in atmosphere. Frangokastello didn't exist until a few
years ago (apart from the castle and the ruins of a monastery) and
all the buildings are new.
Accommodation: Plenty
of rooms, studios and apartments.
Restaurants: A few
restaurants, some of them excellent.
Shopping: Three mini
markets cater to everyday needs.
Nightlife: Non-existent
Beach: Superb sandy
beaches. The main beach next to the castle can get a little crowded
but there are some other beautiful and quiet sandy beaches within
walking distance. Because of its extremely shallow water the main
beach is the best anywhere in West Crete if you have small children.
