High above Anopolis, right at the tree line (1600m in this area) you can find some of the oldest trees in Europe. Cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens) at this altitude grow extremely slowly and tend to expand in width rather than height in order to better cope with strong winds and deep snow in winter. In a photo it is difficult to give an idea of the size of these trees which is why I left a person in the image. As you can see the trunk is huge with a diameter of around 3 meters at the base.
Accurate dating on these trees has not been done yet but some of them may be close in age to their Califonian cousins in other White Mountains.
