The Bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) is probably the most impressive bird of Crete. Its wingspan is up to 3m and the length of the body (including its diamond-shaped tail) is up to 1.25m. It feeds almost exclusively on bones (and especially bone marrow). The beardevulture isa threatened bird. There are only 4 breeding pairs and a total of 25 individuals (mature and immature) left in Crete (2000 figures).
