The island of Elafonisi can be reached on foot by wading through shallow water for a few metres. The distance will vary as the sand is shifting constantly. Yesterday, I had to walk for about 200m and the water went to my knees.
At times it can be a shorter walk, rarely longer but the water is sometimes deeper (to mid-thighs). Around three years ago (again it was in winter) you could even walk to the island without getting your feet wet. I guess that for a short while it just stopped being an island!
It doesn't really matter as even now in January the water temperature is around 16 to 17C, far from freezing cold.
