Snails on a rock on a mountainside
A colony of snails on a rock in the northern Madhares (just above Poria on the way to Melindaou). You can see a detail of the snail in the photo below. Crete has about 120 land snail species, some 20 of which belong to the clausiliid genus Albinaria shown in these two photos.
The rock itself is interesting. It is dark limestone with incrustations of lighter coloured limestone. It makes for spectacular shapes and is very common in that area of the mountains (as well as in many other places)
