View from the acropolis of Polyrrhenia  - 27th March 2008

An acropolis (from the Greek acri f. or acro n. meaning extremity, and also end, tip, summit, edge and the Greek polis meaning city) means the extremity of a city, the highest part, the summit of a city.
For purposes of defense, early settlers naturally chose elevated ground, frequently a hill with precipitous sides.

Here in Polyrrhenia you reach the acropolis by walking up and around the southern side of the steep hill,. The views from the top are superb, encompassing a full view of the bay of Kissamos towards the North (here in this picture), the White Mountains to the South-East as well as the rolling hills of Kissamos which stretch all the way to the end of West Crete
