Bacini above a church entrance
Bacini details
Church of the Panagia in Prinos
Bacini are glazed bowls (often Venetian in date) that are
embedded into the exterior of churches at time of
construction. Quite often they have now disappeared and you
can only see the shape of the missing bowls above the entrance.
Their Greek name is skyphion, plural skyphia, from the ancient
Greek skyphos, a small deep drinking vessel.
The church of the Panagia in Prinos still has some very well
preserved examples dating back to the beginning of the 15th
century.
