The monastery of Chryssoskalitisa  - 28th March 2006

The monastery of Chryssoskalitisa is located a few km before reaching Elafonisos. It used to stand alone in a barren landscape but now there is a small settlement around it, constituting of a few tavernas and small hotels as well as houses probably belonging to the owners of the nearby greenhouses.

So because of these (often not very pretty) buildings it is kind of difficult to take the 'old style' pictures of the monastery, standing alone on its promontory by the sea. There is stuff in the way: houses, power lines, car wrecks, rusting machinery. So I got close instead. The tree in the foreground is a mulberry tree. You prune them every winter (if you don't want ripe mulberries messing your pavement in the summer) which is why it looks like an overdone bonsai.
